Spain’s Osakidetza health network completes region-wide rollout of AGFA HealthCare Enterprise Imaging, bringing all its hospitals and care centers onto a single, centralized medical imaging platform across the Basque Country

AGFA HealthCare is pleased to announce the successful completion of the regional Enterprise Imaging implementation across the entire Osakidetza public health network in the Basque Country, Spain. Following a progressive rollout that began in March 2024, all hospitals are now live, marking the full transition from distributed, site-based PACS environments to a single, centralized Enterprise Imaging platform supporting medical image management at the regional level. The Osakidetza network includes 6 main hospitals and 58 care centers, which together perform 2.4 million imaging exams per year.

The region-wide deployment concludes a multi-year strategic initiative to unify, modernize and centralize medical imaging across Osakidetza, replacing multiple local PACS systems with one AGFA HealthCare Enterprise Imaging platform. The project represents both a major technological transformation and a significant organizational change, standardizing imaging workflows and access to data across the network.

Transitioning to a unified regional imaging network

The distributed PACS environments supported local imaging needs but resulted in fragmented architectures and information silos. Through the transition to AGFA HealthCare Enterprise Imaging, we have established a centralized image management environment that enables medical images and associated data to be captured, managed, stored and shared seamlessly across the entire Osakidetza health network in the Basque Country. With the rollout complete and all hospitals in the network operating on a single Enterprise Imaging platform, our healthcare professionals now have unified access to patients’ imaging histories — including more than 33 million legacy studies — regardless of where examinations were performed,” says Nico Gonzalez Lopez, Head of the Technology Service, Osakidetza.

Completing this regional project is a major milestone for Osakidetza and clearly demonstrates how our Enterprise Imaging solution can support medical imaging at true regional scale. Working closely with Osakidetza, we have delivered a unified platform that supports collaboration across hospitals, enables secure access to imaging data wherever care is delivered, and provides a solid technological foundation for future initiatives. The successful completion of the rollout across all hospitals reflects both the strength of our collaboration and the maturity of the Enterprise Imaging solution,” says Miguel Angel Navarro Romero, AGFA HealthCare Country Sales Manager Iberia.

A scalable platform designed for the future

AGFA HealthCare’s Enterprise Imaging was selected for the Osakidetza network due to its ability to support radiology, molecular imaging, cardiology and other image-producing specialties within a single, scalable environment. The solution includes advanced diagnostic tools, reporting, worklist management, the XERO® Universal Viewer and Vendor Neutral Archive (VNA) for long-term storage of images and documents.

For 18 years, AGFA HealthCare has successfully partnered with Osakidetza to manage radiology imaging across the Basque Region, consistently supporting the region’s large imaging volumes. During this period, AGFA HealthCare solutions have managed more than 33 million studies, over 5 billion images, and approximately 1,700 TB of imaging storage, with continued growth anticipated.

Through this long-term partnership, centralizing management, monitoring and support have simplified operations while further strengthening the robustness, scalability, and resilience of the platform.

In Spain, there are already more than 80 AGFA HealthCare Enterprise Imaging and PACS installations.
